$469 Decision

A couple days ago, I went down to guitar center and dropped $300 on a vocal recording microphone. And another $59 on a stand, plus $49 on a pop screen. Add the protection plans, and it came to $469.00. But hey, I got a free pair of $200 recording headphones out of it. Guitar Center rocks your socks off. Well, they rock mine off, anyways.

At home, as I was unpacking my loot, it hit me that with this purchase I have now officially decided that I am a musician. You don't drop that kinda "skinnage" (that's an Anthony-ism right there) on recording gear if unless you've decided to take it seriously.

So it's 4:38 a.m., and I've been recording for about 5 hours. Right now, I'm loving having my own room that's not in the house. I'm far from finished with this recording, but I thought I'd share it anyways.

Think of it as a project not even half completed. There is no bass. There are no drums. I have more guitar parts I want to lay down. The solo is improvisory and may be completely replaced. The vocals may be completely redone; some parts, at least, will have to be, since I got the words wrong (last verse, although I bet no one even notices). And I wanted to add more harmonies, but Garage Band started trippin' out on me, and it was late, so I figured we both needed some rest (me and the computer/software/microphone, that is).

Keeping all that in mind, give a listen to Memory (it should already be loading just below, and should auto-start once enough of it is loaded... for those on slow connections, get cable...):

Why did I choose Memory to record first? Well, for starters, it has always been the unexpected favorite, from a lyrical standpoint, of the few that read my lyrics. Plus, from a musical standpoint, it's quite simple. So it made sense.

Anyways. There you go. I'll post more as I record it. Thanks for listening.

Way cool dude. It's been forever since I've recording stuff. Can't wait to get real job so I can afford to do that kinda action.

Skinnage, cabbage/lettuce, duckets, float-up, jack, wad, long green, hey it's all the same when the eagle has landed. The problem is it slips through our hands almost before it hits it.
Sweet on the purchase and the sound bite is cool!
Rock on my man!

Dude I never listened to the song on this page for some reason...I think I missed it. In any event, just wanted say...way cool song. I like it a lot. The recording's not half bad either. That's a kick-a mic. I think the key may be a little low for your voice. Seems like you were right on the edge of your range for the majority of the song, which hides the very, very nice tone that finally emerges when you move a little higher. Move the song up a couple steps and I think you would really be taking advatage of how much you've improved vocally in the past few years. Sounds good, dude!

Thanks dude. Yeah, it is a kick-@$$ mic. I've been meaning to get back at it again.

I think you're definitely right about the range thing. Debra said the same thing, she didn't like it so low. I suppose I could try bringing it up a couple steps, maybe even a fourth or something.

Dude, you remember when that used to be my range? You remember how low I used to sing? Used to be that was the range in which I wrote (as evidenced by the fact that it's the range in which I wrote this song). It's kinda funny, I don't really write or sing in this range hardly at all anymore. I've improved a lot in the upper range, both in terms of my actual range, and also in terms of vocal quality, especially on the upper end. In fact, I think I've actually lost a bit of the lowest end. Probably because I don't really use it anymore (ahhh, choir... Yohan... good times.... except when he left me hanging... which was all the freaking time...).

Anyways. Thanks for the comments, dude. I'll try to get another recording up here.

Oh, also... are you telling me you never listened to the song while you were in the States, but now that you're in Africa, on like a fraction of dial-up, you went ahead and listened to it??? As Strong Bad would say... What da craaaap??!

Actually pretty much everybody here in Dakar has DSL. I'm on a wireless connection here in the SB Guesthouse.
